How we tested
We have learned in the worst way that testing cordless drills simply by drilling holes or tightening screws can produce a distorted image of performance. A better method is to combine the two activities in a way that reflects the work of a day. Contributing editor Joe Truini developed our test, which takes the exercise to its limit. First, we use a new 1-in. scrape a little on each drill and drill 24 holes with it. Next, we drive 12 of 2 inches. screw the drills into pilot holes drilled in a beam treated under pressure. Finally, we counted the number of 3 inches. Thick-threaded plaster screws every drill could drive before the battery was turned off.

Makita FD02W 12V max Lithium-Ion Cordless 3/8-Inch Driver-Drill Kit
Craftsman C3 19.2 Volt Lithium Ion Wireless 1/2 "Compact Drill Driver | $ 60
craft drill
Budget
Amp-Hour: 1.5 / Weight: 3.9 lb. / 3-in plaster screws: 43

What we liked
With a body almost 2 inches shorter than that of professional models, this is an agile tool. It is also very hardworking and intelligent, with a meter that tells you how much battery you have left, a good battery mounting design and a work light well placed on the base of the handle. In addition, its background bias helps you stand firm in a vertical position in a bank.

What we did not do
The forward and backward switch can easily end between the two positions, especially if you are right-handed and use your thumb to click.

DEWALT DCD791B 20V MAX XR Li-Ion 0.5 "Brushless Compact Drill / Driver $ 129

dewalt
DEWALT
Budget
Weight: 3 pounds

What we liked
This is a product easy to handle and of professional quality. It has the softest turning clutch ring and a three-speed transmission with graphics that combine speed with the task.

What we did not do
The DeWalt has excellent punching and driving chops, but when those activities were combined, the drill pushed relatively few screws before the battery gave way.

Hitachi DS18DGL - 1/2 "Compact Screwdriver Set without 1/2" Lithium Ion Cable | $ 89

hitachi
Budget
Weight: 3.7 lb / 3 in. Plaster screws: 156

What we liked
The Hitachi drills holes and screws quickly, and is loaded with useful features, such as a rotating work light. To conserve your battery, the tool has a power limiting switch for low speed applications, such as driving and removing screws in appliances.

What we did not do
The High / Low switch is so rigid that you can twist a thumb by moving it.

Makita XPH102 18V LXT Drill and hammer kit with 1/2 "hammer without lithium-ion cable | $ 119

makita drill
MAKITA
Budget
Amp-Hour: 3.0 / Weight: 4.9 lb. / 3-in. plaster screws: 227

What we liked
The three evaluators agreed that the Makita was one of the best power tools they had ever used. Some talented engineers designed their high torque motor and transmission to squeeze every ounce of battery performance. It also exhibits an excellent industrial design. For a large and heavy drill, it is well balanced and easily handled due to a nice shaped handle with a lot of rubber overmold.

What we did not do
The change to change from hammer to drill or handling functions is too difficult to slide.

ridgid drill
RIDGID
Budget
Amp-Hour: 1.5 / Weight: 4.2 lb. / 3-in. plaster screws: 41

What we liked
Among the pro tools, it has the thinnest profile, which facilitates its handling. In addition, Ridgid gave more than a passing thought to its bit clip, which remains firm but not too aggressive, a feature that eluded other designers.

What we did not do
We will vote for a larger battery, allowing the drill to drive more screws and simpler icons into the battery charger.
